Chris David
Welcome to the world of studiously executed and handcrafted stone. Here you will find Komodo dragons, ‘Giant leaf’ tables and birdbaths, water features, and a host of other curiosities. The craftsman behind these works of art, is Chris David. Chris is an ex-trawlerman who was born and bred in Hastings. His unique, frost-proofed garden sculptures have attracted the attention of people all over the country. The famous ‘Mermaid Hotel’ in Rye boasts two of his pieces on show. What makes Chris’ creations so special is the detail and care and attention that goes into each one from conception to completion.
Using a combination of very fine silica sand and cement, Chris produces truly specialized, quirky ‘high-class novelties’. The silica sand is quarried near Sevenoaks in Kent. The sand was laid on the High Weald Delta swamp 150 million years ago, and is particularly appropriate for the fine detail on Chris’ sculptures. Chris has personally constructed machinery and tools in order to create, mould and shape his ‘objets d’art’. His inventions include recycling a tractor engine as a centrifuge for the shaping of some of these truly organic and unique pieces.
